Following the death of an 18-year-old high school girl employed at a female-staffed bar in Osaka early Sunday, likely due to alcohol poisoning, Nikkan Gendai (Feb. 15) reports that the incident is the latest example of the dangers to young women in the world of adult entertainment.

According to the Osaka prefectural police, the 27-year-old male owner of Sora discovered the girl at around 12:20 p.m., by which time her body had already gone cold. The employee added that she had started her shift at around 11 p.m. the day before and went to sleep after finishing.

Fuzoku writer Yukio Kamimura tells Nikkan Gendai that the situation in Osaka is likely due to a customer knocking out the employee with liquor.

“Male customers in these places are dealing with girls who don’t know how to drink. They’ll throw back drinks in one go,” explains Kamimura. “The girls will get drunk fast and collapse. The Minami entertainment district of Osaka has seen a serious growth in the sales of drugs designed to fall within a legal gray zone, but law enforcement might get the upper hand with a new law, reports Shukan Asahi Geino (Nov. 3).

“Legal herbs” have documented adverse effects, but there are no laws regulating their possession and utilization, which has putting law enforcement in a difficult position.

“America-mura is known to be an area for drugs,” says a news reporter covering the society beat. “There are 20 clubs situated there, an area smaller than Shibuya, and many often receive illicit drugs, like weed, from foreigners. Pedestrians are approached out of nowhere for possible transactions.”

Dating back approximately one year, shops with signs reading “specializing in legal herbs” began to emerge. Now about 10 can be spotted in one area. With prices in the range of 1,000 to 3,000 yen per gram, most users are teenagers and those in their 20s.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare defines “legal herbs” to be tea leaves that have had chemicals similar to speed or marijuana applied. The practice started to spread through Japan about a decade ago. When inhaled, the user will hallucinate or become physically excited.

A writer from a magazine that specializes in non-fiction stories tells the tabloid, “You can easily buy the drugs online or at shops. You can even spot them in Tokyo in areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro. It also seems like sales are expanding to suburban areas.”

Passersby can spot maids along Nipponbashi’s main drag, known as “Ota-dori” (otaku street) distributing fliers for their shops. On weekends, the avenue will be especially crowded with these girls.

“When you reach a point where the market for maid establishments is as saturated as it is now, how adorable your girls are will not win customers,” says a maid cafe owner. “Some massage places are offering intimacy, such as letting customers lay down next to the maids for 1,000 yen for 10 minutes. Some also will let customers touch the girls.”

It is not only shop managers, however, who are getting aggressive. Girls, too, are offering value-added services — in other words, fuzoku-related frolic.

“Many maids are secretly starting to provide discrete services in order to establish regulars,” says the same Osaka-based reporter. “They’ll charge extra on their own for these extra services. This kind of thing has led to rumors about which girls will allow for a customer to cop a feel or even get full service. I’d guess that some shops will soon take advantage of this and start offering illegal out-call services.”

Shukan Jitsuwa reports that the Osaka prefectural police are looking into any violations of child welfare and adult entertainment statutes. In any case, the tabloid concludes, Osaka’s otaku oasis is indeed turning into an adult playground. (A.T.)
