Rumors of a potential adult video (AV) debut by actress Saki Takaoka are currently swirling through the industry. Shukan Asahi Geino (Feb. 23) reports that the interest is due largely to the amazing success of Minako Komukai.

Komukai, 26, a popular pin-up model and stripper, released her first AV film last year through label Alice Japan. Sales topped 200,000 units, a whopping figure considering hit status is generally reserved for a mere 10,000 discs.

Shukan Asahi Geino says that the business is being influenced by the “Minako Komukai effect,” whereby AV producers are seeking big-name talent from other areas of entertainment to make AV appearances.

“AV labels had previously been targeting various big names, perhaps former celebrities, idols or actresses, from the entertainment industry to make appearances,” says an employee at a production company. “But Komukai’s impact has been tremendous, reaching mega-hit status. Makers and producers are now running around looking for Minako Komukai II.”

Tokyo Sports (Feb. 7), on page one, first reported that the 39-year-old Takaoka received an offer of 100 million yen from an AV producer to appear.

Speculation is now swirling around Takaoka, who Asagei says is suffering through challenging times.

“She gave birth to her third child in September,” says an entertainment writer at a sports paper. “Her common-law husband ran out on her, leaving behind massive debts. So she that, three kids, and her mother in one house — and it all rests on her shoulders.”

Komukai, for her part, also endured various difficulties before releasing her first film, including multiple arrests for drug violations.

The magazine says that if Takaoka decides to appear it will not only clear her financial trouble but open her up to new directions in life.

“Over the past 10 years her priority has been with raising her children. She has shied away from sexy roles,” says a source quoted by the magazine. “However, her oldest son is fully grown. The offer is also within her line of work. So there is no real reason for her to refuse.” (K.N.)

The Japanese government’s Earthquake Research Committee announced on February 9 that the risk of a magnitude 7 earthquake striking the southern Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, remains at about 30 percent within the next decade and about 70 percent over the next 30 years.

Naturally, daily tabloid Tokyo Sports (Feb. 12) finds it important to give its readership a heads up on what a fuzoku parlor patron might want to consider if the Big One strikes while in the middle of a sex session.

Keep in mind that structures may not be able to withstand aftershocks. “You must control yourself,” Ikoma warns — after all, staff members at these types of joints cannot be relied upon for proper emergency guidance. “There are no evacuation manuals so you need to secure your own safety.”

Following the death of an 18-year-old high school girl employed at a female-staffed bar in Osaka early Sunday, likely due to alcohol poisoning, Nikkan Gendai (Feb. 15) reports that the incident is the latest example of the dangers to young women in the world of adult entertainment.

To recap, emergency services arrived at Sora in the afternoon of February 12 to find a third-year high school student lying face up on the floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sora, located in Osaka‘s Chuo Ward, is a variation of a hostess club termed a “girl’s bar,” which are clubs legally registered as after-hours, eating-and-drinking establishments so as to avoid more strict regulations under the Law Regulating Adult Entertainment Businesses.

According to the Osaka prefectural police, the 27-year-old male owner of Sora discovered the girl at around 12:20 p.m., by which time her body had already gone cold. The employee added that she had started her shift at around 11 p.m. the day before and went to sleep after finishing.

Fuzoku writer Yukio Kamimura tells Nikkan Gendai that the situation in Osaka is likely due to a customer knocking out the employee with liquor.

“Male customers in these places are dealing with girls who don’t know how to drink. They’ll throw back drinks in one go,” explains Kamimura. “The girls will get drunk fast and collapse. Customers will often boast on various Internet sites about getting such-and-such girl at such-and-such bar to pass out.”

In addition, the scribe says, incidents involving encounter cafes, in which young women may be escorted off the premises by male customers, and the peddling of “legal herbs” are on the rise.

“Girls taking low-quality herbs will find themselves feeling light-headed and frequently wetting their beds each night,” Kamimura says. “Their speech patterns will also turn towards melancholy. Playing on their ignorance is a way to take advantage of these girls.”

The article says that real problems unfold in clubs in which patrons pay to see women wearing their school uniforms through a two-way mirror at a nozoki heya club. Shrewd customers will take illicit photos and follow the girls home later to confirm the location of their residence and school. The photos will then be displayed on the Web sites, with the girl’s school name listed.

“As to the encounter cafes, the girls will be offered 10,000 yen for being able to watch her masturbate with her panties on while in a karaoke box or other similar establishment,” continues Kamimura. “The guys will then secretly take photos of some of the girls.
